Trials and Temptations

Last Thursday evening I was at Enfield Sign Church for their fortnightly bible study. Laurie helped us to understand the letter of James from the New Testament.

james_wide_tWe  looked at Chapter 1, which in some Bibles is shown as ‘Trials and temptations.’

We talked about the difference between ‘Trial’ and ‘Temptations’, and I have to say it hadn’t really occurred to me what the difference was until we started to talking about the Bible passage.

‘Trials’ come from outside of ourselves… they are the everyday problems, big and small that we have to face. How we react to them will depend on our Christian faith and experience… some people will abandon God, feeling he has let them down. Others…  more faithful and experienced Christians will realise this is the very time when you need to draw close to him.

‘Temptations’ on the other hand, come from within….they are our desires and selfishness. We cannot blame others for falling for temptation… it is up to us how we face those inside feelings of wanting things for ourselves. That is why we pray to God in the Lord’s Prayer… ‘do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ We pray for God’s protection in those times of trial and temptation. God does not test us or tempt us.. that is the evil one or Satan, so we have to always reach out to God to help us.

So remember… when things are difficult and you do not know what to do or you believe you are making the wrong decision.. pray to God for help, wisdom and strength. He will always guide you to make the right decision.
