St Boniface of Crediton

saints6-4bonifaceBoniface was born in Crediton, Devon, where I worked before I moved to London. He lived in the 7th Century. After he was ordained he went as a missionary to Germany where later he was made bishop.

He taught the people that with was wrong to worship trees like the pagans did and bravely chopped down a holy oak tree. When no disaster happened many people were converted to Christianity.

He set up many monasteries and lived to be an old man. However, this day in 754, while waiting for some Christians to come for confirmation he was murdered by a group of pagans.
