Today we light the second candle on the Advent wreath. This candles represents the prophets of old. All through the Old Testament we read about the prophets, Samuel, Ezekiel, Elijah, Jeremiah, Isaiah. They were men of God, who through prayer and contemplation heard his words and communicated them to the King and the people.
Many of the prophecies are read out during Advent reminding us that the story of Jesus began many centuries ago when God promised a Messiah to save the people of Israel.
The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light.
They lived in a land of shadows,
but now light is shining on them.
He will be called, “Wonderful Counsellor,”
“Mighty God,” “Eternal Father,”
“Prince of Peace.”
His royal power will continue to grow;
his kingdom will always be at peace.
He will rule as King David’s successor,
basing his power on right and justice,
from now until the end of time.
The Lord Almighty is determined to do all this. (Isaiah 9:1-2.6-7)
