The first Sunday after Epiphany is the when we remember the baptism of Jesus by his cousin, John the Baptist.
It is thought his baptism is an outward demonstration of the start of his ministry. It is also known as a ‘theophany’ when God reveals himself to the world. In the Gospel stories we are told that as Jesus rose from the water, a voice was heard from heaven saying ‘This is my Son in whom I am well pleased’ and at the same time the Holy Spirit, like a dove, descended upon him. It is because of such events in the bible we have the teaching of the Trinity – Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
